Thomas Recchio, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the English Department and director of the Freshman English Program at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Recchio specializes in Composition, Rhetorical & Critical Theory, Victorian Literature, the Novel, and the Essay. After receiving his doctorate in English Literature from Rutgers University in 1982, he taught at Rutgers until coming to UConn in 1989.

Sarah Winter, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the English Department and Co-Director of Freshman English. Dr. Winter specializes Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Twentieth-Century British Literature, Literary/ Critical Theory, Rhetoric and Composition, the Novel and Drama. Dr. Winter received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Yale University. She worked at Yale University from 1991-2001 as an Assistant and Associate Professor before coming to the University of CT in 2002.

Course Offerings

 

ENGL 110 - Seminar in Academic Writing

  • Either semester. Four credits. Not open for credit to students who have passed ENGL 105. Students placed in ENGL 104 must pass that class before enrolling in ENGL 110.
  • Instruction in academic writing through interdisciplinary reading. Assignments emphasize interpretation, argumentation, and reflection. Revision of formal assignments and instruction on grammar, mechanics and style.

ENGL 111 - Seminar in Writing through Literature

  • Either semester. Four credits. Not open for credit to students who have passed ENGL 109. Students placed in ENGL 104 must pass that class before enrolling in ENGL 111.
  • Instruction in academic writing through literary reading. Assignments emphasize interpretation, argumentation, and reflection. Revision of formal assignments and instruction on grammar, mechanics and style.

  • Q: What are the minimum requirements required for instructor certification in English ?
  • A: The minimum degree requirement for teachers wishing to teach Early College Experience English courses is usually a Master's of Arts degree in English; however, a candidate with Master's in Education and sufficiently strong English background may be considered. Interviews will be conducted before certification is granted.
